Clinical and Patient Care Duties
- Checks vital signs, weighs and measures patients, obtains specimens, and records findings on patients’ charts.
- Instructs patients on how to obtain specimens for laboratory testing and performs basic screening tests such as dipstick and hemoccult.
- Obtains blood specimens for laboratory testing through venipuncture and/or fingerstick methods.
- Prepares collected specimens for pickup by labeling and completing required forms; retrieves lab results as needed.
- Performs vision and hearing tests and simple urinalysis.
- Administers emergency first aid, including basic life support procedures.
- Performs simple first aid such as dressing changes, bandaging, wound cleansing, and ear irrigation.
- Prepares patients for examination and assists medical providers during exams by providing necessary supplies and equipment.
- Operates electrocardiograph (EKG) equipment to record electrical wave tracings of the heart.
- Informs patients of proper preparation procedures for various medical tests.
Patient Interaction and Communication
- Conducts interviews with clients to obtain routine personal and medical information and health histories.
- Reports observations of patients to medical staff to ensure professional assessment and timely intervention.
- Answers routine inquiries from patients in person or via telephone and makes appropriate referrals.
- Educates patients and families about available healthcare services and promotes safe, healthy living.
- Directs and escorts patients to other hospital departments or facilities as needed.
Administrative and Support Responsibilities:
- Maintains, completes, processes, and files patient charts, forms, and other documents accurately.
- Prepares examination rooms, including cleaning and sterilizing instruments and equipment.
- Maintains inventory of equipment, stock, and supplies for the assigned unit.
- Coordinates scheduling and rebooking of appointments through manual and/or automated systems; enters patient data into hospital information systems.
- Works collaboratively as part of a healthcare team and assists in the orientation and training of new employees.
